Velada™ Light Therapy for Macular Degeneration

Now Available at Burlington County Eye Physicians – Beginning April 2026

Burlington County Eye Physicians is proud to be among a select group of ophthalmology practices offering Velada Light Therapy, an innovative treatment designed to support retinal health in patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

This non-invasive therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity within the retina, helping support visual function in patients with early to intermediate stages of AMD.

Our specialists will begin offering Velada treatments in April 2026, providing patients throughout South Jersey and Bucks County Pennsylvania access to this advanced technology close to home.

What Is Velada Light Therapy?

What Is Velada Light Therapy?

Velada Light Therapy uses photobiomodulation, a technique that delivers controlled wavelengths of light to retinal tissue.

These wavelengths help stimulate mitochondrial activity within retinal cells. Healthy mitochondrial function plays an important role in maintaining retinal metabolism and cellular repair processes.

For patients with macular degeneration, supporting retinal cell function may help:

  • Improve visual performance
  • Support retinal health
  • Slow functional decline associated with AMD

What to Expect During Treatment

Velada therapy is designed to be comfortable and convenient for patients.

Typical treatment sessions include:

  1. A brief evaluation and imaging of the retina
  2. Positioning at the light therapy device
  3. Exposure to specific therapeutic light wavelengths
  4. Sessions lasting only a few minutes

Patients generally return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

WHAT IS DRY AMD?

Dry macular degeneration, also known as dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a common eye condition that primarily affects older adults and leads to a gradual loss of vision.

CAUSES

  • The exact cause isn't fully understood.
  • Risk factors include age, genetics, smoking, and certain health conditions (like high blood pressure and obesity).

SYMPTOMS

  • Blurred or fuzzy central vision.
  • Difficulty recognizing faces or reading.
  • A dark or empty area in the center of vision (known as a scotoma).
  • Distortion of straight lines (straight lines may appear wavy).

STAGES

  • Early Stage: Often has no noticeable symptoms, but drusen (yellow deposits) may be present.
  • Intermediate Stage: Some vision changes may occur, and larger drusen may be observed.
  • Late Stage: Significant vision loss can happen as the macula continues to deteriorate.

DIAGNOSIS

Our Physicians will perform a comprehensive eye exam, including visual acuity tests and imaging tests (like optical coherence tomography) to assess the retina.
