What is Glaucoma? Here’s what South Jersey Residents Need to Know…

A brief overview to answer the question “What is Glaucoma?”

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that effects millions of Americans. The most common type of glaucoma is open angle glaucoma, which is usually asymptomatic. Almost half for the people in this country with glaucoma are unaware that they have it, since there are usually no symptoms. That is why routine eye examinations should be a part of everyone’s regimen. Diagnosis of glaucoma usually occurs after testing in the eye doctors (ophthalmologist or optometrist) office. Many patients with glaucoma can be treated effectively with eye drops or laser.  More serious cases of glaucoma may require surgery to prevent vision loss. Our practice is pleased to have a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist, who is prepared to handle the most serious cases of glaucoma.
